#122, Buy tomato plants at Tomatomania
It’s that time of year again. Tomatomania!!!!
Tomatomania! is the largest and longest running California tomato seeding sale. They sell hundreds of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes in pop-up sales all over the state. Check their website for the next sale nearest you.
Tomatomania! also includes classes, tomato tastings, and impromptu social gatherings at popular nurseries and garden centers from coast to coast.
They sell 300 heirloom and hybrid tomato varieties, and they feature everything from pots and fertilizer to stakes and enthusiastic expert advice.
I heard that there were going to be Tomatomaniacs near me in Encino at Tapia Bros., so I hopped in the Jeep and headed down the boulevard.
If you’re interested in finding out about events near you, follow Tomatomania! on Facebook. The event at Tapia Bros. wasn’t displayed on their website calendar, but I saw it noted in my Facebook feed. They’ll be in Encino through Friday.
If you look below, you can see Scott Daigre in the red shirt. He’s the lead tomatomaniac. You can find his book and videos on the website. There are also lots of growing tips, so check it out.
This is my box of six plants, a bargain at $30.
I like to buy some varieties that I won’t find in stores.
And some I just know I like.
It was fun walking through their pop-up shop. I liked reading the names and habits of each plant, though they sound more like racehorses than tomatoes.
I also bought Indian Stripe, Lucky Tiger, and Big Rainbow. I’m looking forward to getting them all in the ground.
Tapia Bros. is always good for ambiance too. The guy below followed us out to the Jeep.
Soon it’ll be time for Caprese salads, panzanella, and gazpacho. I’ll be ready.
